The Optoelectronics Company is delighted to announce that USHIO's new high-power laser diodes are now in mass production. As laser projection equipment and laser TVs get smaller and smaller, these two new diodes offer manufacturers the massive optical power output they need to enable better image quality, more vivid colour and greater clarity.

The HL63283HD is a visible wavelength laser diode in a 9mm diameter CAN package with high heat dissipation and high wall plug efficiency of 40%. It offers a massive 1.2W optical output power at a typical centre lasing wavelength of 637nm at 25 degrees Centigrade. Its operating temperature range is -10 to +45 degrees Centigrade, typical operating voltage is 2.3V, LD reverse voltage is 2V with a typical threshold current of 340mA and operating current of 1300mA. The typical beam divergence parallel to the junction is 10 degrees, perpendicular to the junction is 33 degrees.

The HL63290HD is also a visible wavelength laser diode in a 9mm diameter CAN package with high heat dissipation and high wall plug efficiency of 40%. However, it offers even more optical output power of 2.2W CW at a typical centre lasing wavelength of 638nm at 25 degrees Centigrade. Its operating temperature range is -10 to +55 degrees Centigrade, typical operating voltage is 2.4V, LD reverse voltage is 2V with a typical threshold current of 600mA and operating current of 2.4A. The typical beam divergence parallel to the junction is 10 degrees, perpendicular to the junction is 33 degrees.

"The march toward higher and higher power laser diodes shows no signs of slowing down. High power red laser diodes remain critical to achieve the vivid colour, brightness and image quality required for laser TV and laser display applications. These two new USHIO red laser diodes enable overall output power to be maximised without increasing the number of components," said Tony Pope, M.D., the Optoelectronics Company.

Notwithstanding their optical output power, both diodes offer a high wall-plug efficiency rate of 40 per cent which reduces both their electrical power consumption and the amount of heat that must be removed from the package, allowing for a more compact and integrated design, vital as manufacturers compete to produce the most streamlined and beautiful TVs.

High wall-plug efficiency, particularly for high-power lasers, is critical as it not only reduces electricity consumption but also reduces the demands on electrical installations and on the cooling system, resulting in a reduction of the size of the laser system.

Both the USHIO HL63283HD and HL63290HD are currently in full production to meet growing demand.
