Scientist (Optical Designer):
POSITION TITLE: SCIENTIST (OPTICAL DESIGNER)
FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT
POSITION SUMMARY:
•To provide appropriate technical expertise to all aspects of new
product design, verification and introduction as part of the Company’s
overall design control procedure.
•Provide the appropriate lens design and optical expertise in new
product development projects, ensuring that appropriate technology is
used to bring commercially successful new products to market.
•Responsible for keeping abreast of the latest lens/optics product
developments, evaluating their potential impact on the business and
recommending their incorporation into the current and future product
lines.
•Lead and participate in multi disciplinary teams engaged on above activities.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•To provide appropriate technical expertise to all aspects of new
product design, verification and introduction as part of the Company’s
overall design control procedure.
•Provide the appropriate lens design and optical expertise in new
product development projects, ensuring that appropriate technology is
used to bring commercially successful new products to market.
•Provide technical expertise, process, production and project
engineering support to the manufacturing business units, QA/RA, and
Technical Innovations departments to satisfy business objectives.
•Liaises with external organizations including Universities and
Research Institutions and represent the company at scientific
seminars.
•Appraise, specify, develop, commission and test new and existing
metrology systems and equipment.
•Assist with defining, undertaking and documenting experiments/tests
required to ensure the successful development of new products in a
manufacturing environment.
•Support the creation and maintenance of DHR files to the standard
required for Regulatory accreditation.
•Provide cross-site lens design and optical expertise to support
business objectives across the company.
•Provide intellectual property expertise on lens design by staying
current on the latest open literature and patents in the field.
Review of any new patent application. To support our Patent
Applications. To assist on infringement reviews. To provide a
cross-site liaison with relevant patent specialists and attorneys.
•To provide and support the software necessary to generate the optical
designs within the manufacturing environment, jobfile and minipath
file creation.
•To develop and promote the use of Solid Works 3-D Cad as a technical
design tool.
•Timely reporting against objectives, including: design/milestone
reviews, presentations, monthly reports and key performance indicator
monitoring.
•Train other team members as required, to establish and maintain best
work practices; including all technical and training documentation.
•Lead and participate in multi disciplinary teams engaged on above activities.
•Other related duties connected with the Company’s business priorities.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education - BS in Physics with background in optical science or BS in
Mechanical or Industrial Engineering with background in design and
programming (CAD/CAM, AutoCAD, Solidworks)
•Graduate education preferred (MS or PhD) but not necessary
•Experience in the contact lenses and/or optical design a plus
•Experience in relevant industrial technical roles preferred
•Experience in a medical devices/ pharmaceutical industry preferred
•Strong background in MS Office suite.
SKILLS:
•Good knowledge of Quality Assurance and Quality Control systems,
medical device/pharmaceutical, FDA, ISO and International regulatory
environment.
•Good knowledge of Health and Safety in respect of: safe working practice.
•Analytical and problem solving skills with strong intellect.
•Bilingual (English/Spanish).
•Computer literate.
•Willing to travel & relocate to PR.
