Sapphire is a single crystal for of Al2O3. Sapphire is grown using several crystal growing methods such as: KY, EFG and HEM.
They can be grown in a specific crystal orientation for minimum birefringence. They can also be grown in random axis orientation
but are birefringent. The crystal boules or Ingot are sliced up into the desired window thickness and finally polished to the
desired surface finish. Sapphire optical windows can be polished to a wide range surface finishes due to it crystal structure
and it hardness. Sapphire is highly transparent to wavelengths of light between 150 nm (UV) and 5500 nm (IR) and it is also five
times stronger than glass and much tougher than tempered glass.
